I created this design out of a conversation I had with a fellow Etsian: she's a drop-spindler and wanted to find a distaff she could hang from her wrist, since wrapping the wool directly around her arm was getting hot in the summertime!
I hand-turn each distaff from either dyed and laminated hardwood, or natural exotics. After creating an elegant design, I then drill a hole at the top of the tool, and string through a length of deerskin lace, (leather which is exceptionally supple and smooth), which I knot at the top. This slips easily over the hand and hangs down at a comfortable length.
This distaff is designed to be extremely light-weight and comfortable to use. Simply wrap your roving/fiber around the wood, and you have an instant holder that stays out of the way of your drop spindle. (See the last photo for demonstration).
Length of the distaff is about 6 3/4". This is an heirloom-quality tool that will last for many years to come!
